Memphis Military Antiques
Memphis Military AntiquesThis is a really interesting piece of civil war artillery! This is a 3" Union Dyer shell missing its sabot and fuze. What makes this shell interesting is that it went off but didn't completely separate the shell! Instead it blew the fuze out and blew a small section of the side off. This is an extremely uncommon occurrence in civil war ordnance!
This shell is labeled as a rarity of 5 in the Dickey & George shell book (page 113. They also called them confederate burton shells at the time of publishing the book in the 80s, but now we know what these shells truly are).
